Job Overview

SweepSouth is a rapidly scaling technology start-up offering on-demand and subscription cleaning services across four different cities in South Africa. SweepSouth is a little under 3 years old and through a committed, highly educated team with a broad skillset, we have grown to deliver over 1000 cleans a day. We are looking for an operations specialist to take us to 10 000 and beyond.

The Role

Our Head of Operations will oversee overall strategic and operational responsibility for all booking logistics and will build and manage a group of area managers across current and future markets.

She/He will provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence, bridge internal (office) and regional operations, spearhead the scaling, centralisation and automation of processes, and build core operational toolkits for the company.

This senior team member will also play a major role in building on and implementing an operations strategy roadmap, including the national and international expansion of SweepSouth’s operations and building key partnerships with industry role-players including government departments.

Our Head of Operations should have a minimum of 5 years senior management experience delivering the high-volume roll-out of a product or service. Doing so across multiple countries would be advantageous. Doing so across at least one emerging economy would be extremely advantageous.

Personal Attributes

Execution driven. It goes without saying you should be a problem solver, but our ideal candidate should be driven by implementation. You should have a solid track record of prototyping, piloting, implementing and scaling processes. You should be action-oriented and have a ‘get it done’ attitude.

Flexibility . Trying to disrupt an industry in an emerging economy has its challenges. You’re eager to rise to this challenge and the opportunities available excite you. You should be able to handle ambiguity, shifting timelines and continuous change.

Analytical. You don’t just ask for the number, you know how to ask for the right numbers. You know how to balance experience with the available data. You understand confounding factors and you know the difference between correlation and causation.

Leadership. You should have exceptional capacity for managing and leading people. You’re a team builder who has experience in scaling organisations with the ability to connect with staff on an individual level and in large groups. You have the capacity to enforce accountability and develop and empower from the bottom up.

Innovative . At its core, SweepSouth is a tech start-up entering a scale-up phase. You should have an intimate understanding of technology and the ability for tech to aid operations and enable a lean operating environment. Inefficiency should keep you up at night. You should be a creative thinker with the ability to operationalise innovation.


Experience building organisational capacity in a scaling environment, developing a top-notch team and the processes that ensure the organisation runs smoothly

Have 5+ years at senior management level in an operations-focused role, dealing with high volume roll-out of products/services, experience with a technology-based company is preferred

Solid educational background—undergraduate degree required; MBA or similar advanced degree an advantage

High attention to detail & high stress tolerance

Have a strong background in developing and building operational models and toolkits

Proven track record of exceeding goals; evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment; high level of business acumen; ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget

Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent public speaking skills.

Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.

Experience working in a start-up would be to your advantage.

More Details

The successful candidate will need to be based at our headquarters in Cape Town. Traveling between cities will be required at times and may be at short notice.
