PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Chief Financial Officer (CFO) holds the top financial position in the Group and is responsible to all the financial requirements in the Group and all its subsidiaries. This includes tracking cash flow and financial planning as well as analysing the company’s financial strengths and weaknesses and proposing corrective actions. They are further responsible for managing the finance and accounting divisions and for ensuring that the Group and all its subsidiaries financial reports are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
The CEO is further more responsible for forecasting the Group’s financial standing based on financial and operational data and reports provided by the finance and accounting teams and advising the CEO and board on strategic direction. The CFO drive the direction and success of the organisations, using their knowledge and understanding of the financial position of the company.
Responsibility:
Team Management/Leadership
- Oversees Accounting department, budget preparation, and audit functions.
- Works with other department heads to monitor each department and make recommendations.
- Drives in a culture of turning data into usable information to enable smart decision making
- Fosters close working relationships within the wider business
- Works to align all partners thinking & behaviours
- Ensures the finance team has clear vision and direction and all members of the team understand how they contribute to the long-term success
- Establishes a supportive environment with a culture of clear expectation setting, timely feedback, effective training & coaching/mentoring support
- Addresses performance issues within the team in a timely and fair manner
- Drives in appropriate behaviours across the team, fostering alliancing behaviours
- Provides an ongoing focus for the key improvement and business enhancement opportunities identified
- Defines a clear communications strategy
- Drives all members of the team to align with and support the strategy
Financial Discipline:
- Directs the preparation of all financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, shareholder reports, tax returns, and governmental agency reports.
- Compares sales and profit projections to actual figures and budgeted expenses to actual expenses; makes or oversees any necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets.
- Reviews planning process and suggests improvements to current methods.
- Analyses operations to identify areas in need of reorganization, downsizing, or elimination.
- Works with the CEO and other executives to coordinate planning and establish priorities for the planning process.
- Studies long-range economic trends and projects their impact on future growth in sales and market share.
- Identifies opportunities for expansion into new product areas.
- Oversees investment of funds and works with investment bankers to raise additional capital required for expansion
- Drive the company’s cash flow planning and execution thereof
- Perform risk management by analysing the organisation’s liabilities and investments
- Decide on investment strategies by considering cash and liquidity risks
- Control and evaluate the organisation’s fundraising plans and capital structure
- Ensure cash flow is appropriate for the organisation’s operations
- Manage all finance personnel (controllers, treasurers etc.)
- Manage vendor relationships
- Prepare reliable current and forecasting reports
- Identifying and managing business risks and insurance requirements
- Set up and oversee the company’s finance IT system
- Ensure compliance with the law and company’s policies
Processes and Planning:
- Defines the processes and management of systems
- Exploits lean thinking and technology to streamline activity and improve efficiency
- Ensures the brand is clearly reflected in communications and behaviours across the business
- Creates and implements a comprehensive communications strategy focused on the needs of internal teams and external stakeholders
- Identifies and proactively alleviates process, system and reporting risk
Requirements:
Education:
- Hons degree in Accounting, Finance or relevant field
- CA(SA)
- MBA is a plus
Experience:
- Proven experience as CFO, finance manager or relevant role.
- In depth knowledge of Accounting, Taxation Corporate Financial activities and risk management practices
- Proven experience in senior management positions
- Eight to ten years of experience in financial management required.
